This study was conducted to evaluate the effects of ceramic microbeads on the bond strength between resin and zirconia. Microbeads made of zirconia (TZ) and zircon (ZS) were treated with and without hydrofluoric acid (HF). The microbeads were sintered to zirconia disks using intermediate feldspathic porcelains. Two control groups, NB (without microbeads) and AS (without porcelain and microbeads), were also prepared. All specimens were treated with a phosphate primer and veneered with a light-curing resin composite. The 24-h shear bond strengths were determined and analyzed by the Tukey-Kramer test (α=0.05, n=10). The TZ-HF specimen exhibited the highest bond strength, followed by TZ, ZS-HF, ZS, AS, and NB. Scanning electron microscopy observations revealed that the TZ-HF specimen had a complicated debonded surface, and it included microconcavities where the microbeads were detached. Sintering etched zirconia beads onto a zirconia framework with feldspathic porcelains is useful for bonding layered resin composite materials.

PURPOSE: This study aimed at evaluating the effects of surface treatments with tetrabutylammonium dihydrogen trifluoride (TDTF) on the bond strengths of indirect resin composites with titanium-aluminum-vanadium (Ti-6Al-4V) and cobalt-chromium (Co-Cr) alloys. METHODS: Disk-shaped Ti-6Al-4V and Co-Cr alloy specimens were air-abraded with alumina, treated with an etchant (MEP) containing TDTF for 10 s (MEP10) or 30 s (MEP30), and rinsed with water. Subsequently, a primer containing 6-methacryloyloxyhexyl phosphonoacetate was applied to the surfaces, and the specimens were veneered with a light-curing indirect resin composite. Specimens without MEP were prepared as controls (no-MEP). Shear bond strengths were determined before or after 100,000 thermocycles, and the data were analyzed using the Steel-Dwass test (α = 0.05, n = 10). RESULTS: No significant difference was found in the bond strengths between the Ti-6Al-4V and Co-Cr alloys. In each metal alloy, the MEP10 and MEP30 specimens exhibited higher bond strengths than the no-MEP controls after 100,000 thermocycles. Scanning electron microscopy observations revealed that submicron-pits and crevices were formed on both the metal alloys upon applying the MEP etchant. CONCLUSION: Surface treatments with TDTF following air abrasion are useful for improving bonding durability while veneering resin composites on Ti-6Al-4V or Co-Cr alloy frameworks.

OBJECTIVES: In this clinical study, the 8-year clinical performances of a flowable resin composite was compared with that of a conventional resin composite. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Ninety non-carious cervical lesions (NCCLs) in 19 participants were involved in this trial. NCCLs were restored with a flowable composite (Clearfil Flow FX: FX, Kuraray Noritake, Japan) or a conventional resin composite (Clearfil AP-X: AP) in conjunction with a one-step self-etch adhesive (Clearfil S3 Bond). Each participant had both types of resin composite restorations that were randomly allocated. The restorations were evaluated at baseline and annually up to 8 years using modified USPHS criteria. The data were statistically analyzed using the Fisher's exact test, Kaplan-Meier method, and a multivariate Cox-regression with frailty models (p < 0.05). RESULTS: The 8-year participant recall rate was 95%. One hundred percent retention was recorded for AP, whereas four out of 46 restorations were lost for FX during the 8 years. The incidence of marginal staining increased over time regardless of the type of resin composite, showing 48% for AP and 57% for FX after 8 years. Wear of the resin composite occurred only for the flowable material and there was a significant difference between the types of resin composite (p = 0.024). Overall survival rates at 8 years for AP and FX were 98% and 82% respectively (p = 0.110). CONCLUSIONS: The flowable resin composite presented lower wear resistance and showed a lower survival rate compared with the conventional composite after eight years of clinical service. CLINICAL RELEVANCE: Flowable resin composites may show greater wear after long-term clinical service. TRIAL REGISTRATION NUMBER: UMIN000028745, Date of registration: August 19, 2017.

PURPOSE: This study compared the bond strengths of four adhesive systems and four different resin composite block materials: Gradia Block (GR), Shofu Block HC (SH), Estelite Block (ES), and KZR-CAD HR2 (KZ). METHODS: A primer (PZ-AB) containing a silane (γ-MPTS) with 10-methacryloyloxydecyl dihydrogen phosphate (MDP) was applied to ground surfaces of the resin composite block specimens, and the specimens were then bonded to stainless-steel rods using two methyl methacrylate-tributylborane (MMA-TBB)-based luting agents (SB and MT), designated as the PZ-AB/SB and PZ-AB/MT adhesive systems, respectively. The SB resin contained 4-methacryloyloxyethyl trimellitate anhydride (4-META), whereas the MT resin did not. The SB resin without primer (No primer/SB) and a dual-curing composite-type adhesive system (UPA/RelyX) were used as controls. The 24-h tensile bond strengths were determined and analyzed using the Tukey-Kramer HSD test (α = 0.05, n = 8). RESULTS: The highest bond strengths were obtained for the GR/PZ-AB/MT, GR/PZ-AB/SB, KZ/PZ-AB/MT, ES/PZ-AB/SB, and KZ/No primer/SB groups, whereas the KZ/UPA/RelyX, ES/UPA/RelyX, SH/UPA/RelyX, and SH/No primer/SB groups exhibited the lowest bond strengths. CONCLUSION: For each resin composite block material primed with γ-MPTS and MDP, the MMA-TBB-based luting agents, irrespective of the presence of 4-META, provided higher bond strengths than the dual-curing composite-type adhesive system.

OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the bond strength of fiber posts to intraradicular dentine pretreated with two root canal obturation techniques and three postspace irrigation solutions. METHODS: A total of 96 human premolars were collected and treated with complete or partial root canal obturation techniques. The roots were further divided into three subgroups (n = 16) based on postspace irrigation solutions: 2.5% NaOCl, 37% phosphoric acid etching, and distilled water. The fiber posts were bonded with self-adhesive resin cement, and the roots were sectioned into three slices (cervical, middle, and apical regions) after 5,000 thermocycles. The push-out bond strengths were determined and subjected to analysis of variance (α = 0.05). A stereomicroscope was used to observe the failure modes of the specimens. RESULTS: The irrigation solution, root canal obturation technique, and root region had significant effects on bond strength (P < 0.001). The completely obturated root canals showed significantly lower bond strength than the partially obturated root canals. The 2.5% NaOCl treatment produced the highest bond strength among the three irrigation solutions. Among the root regions, the cervical part showed significantly greater bond strength than the middle and apical parts. The most common failure mode was mixed failure. CONCLUSION: The partial root canal obturation technique provided better bond strength of the fiber post to intraradicular dentine. Irrigation with 2.5% NaOCl solution and phosphoric acid etching before cementation improved the push-out bond strength of the fiber posts to intraradicular dentine.

This study investigated the effect of titanium surface treatment with tetrabutylammonium dihydrogen trifluoride (TDTF) on the bond between the titanium and resins for dental applications. Commercially pure titanium (cpTi) specimens were air-abraded with alumina particles, surface-treated with an etchant containing TDTF (Monobond Etch & Prime; ETCH) for 10 s (ETCH10) or 30 s (ETCH30), rinsed with water, treated with a phosphoric monomer-based primer, and bonded to an indirect resin composite. Non-ETCH-treated specimens (no-ETCH) were prepared as a control. The shear bond strengths were determined before and after 100,000 thermocycles, and the means and standard deviations for eight specimens were calculated and statistically analyzed using a non-parametric Steel-Dwass test (α = 0.05). The ETCH10 and ETCH30 specimens exhibited the highest bond strengths, which were maintained for 100,000 thermocycles, while significantly lower values were obtained for no-ETCH specimens. In conclusion, the surface treatment with a TDTF-containing etchant considerably improved the durability of the resin-cpTi bond strength. Appropriate surface treatment of cpTi should be selected for achieving longer-lasting treatments and better clinical solutions for patients.

The aim of this study was to evaluate the effects of air abrasion and plasma treatment on the bond strength between resin and ceriastabilized tetragonal zirconia polycrystals/alumina (Ce-TZP/Al2O3). Ce-TZP/Al2O3 specimens were ground with #1000 silicon-carbide paper, air abraded with alumina, and then exposed to glow-discharge plasma (Abrasion/Plasma). Specimens without air abrasion and/or plasma exposure were also prepared as controls (Abrasion/No plasma, No abrasion/Plasma, and No abrasion/No plasma). The specimens were bonded to resin composite disks with a self-adhesive resin cement (SA) or a luting composite containing no functional monomer (LC). Shear bond strengths were determined after 10,000 thermocycles at 4 and 60°C, and the data were analyzed by nonparametric tests (α=0.05, n=8/group). When using SA, the Abrasion/Plasma specimens exhibited the highest bond strength, followed by the Abrasion/No plasma, No abrasion/Plasma, and No abrasion/No plasma specimens. For LC, neither air abrasion nor plasma treatment exhibited any significant effect on bond strength.

This study aims to evaluate the effects of etching with sulfuric acid (SA) and vinyl sulfonic acid (VSA) on the bond strength between a light-curing indirect resin composite and polyetherketoneketones (PEKK). PEKK specimens were ground with 600 silicon carbide papers, etched with 90% SA for 5 s (90-5 SA) or 95% VSA for 30 s (95-30 VSA), and then modified with a phosphate primer; afterward, a light-curing resin composite was veneered on the specimens. Two control groups were also prepared without etching (unetched/unprimed and unetched/primed). After 20,000 thermocycles in water at 4 and 60 °C, the shear bond strengths of the specimens were determined and subjected to a nonparametric (Steel-Dwass) test (α = 0.05, n = 8). The etched surfaces were observed by scanning electron microscopy (SEM) at 2000× magnification. Higher bond strengths were obtained when the PEKK surface was etched with 90-5 SA or 95-30 VSA (90-5 SA/unprimed 24.3 ± 4.3 MPa, 90-5 SA/primed 26.2 ± 3.2 MPa, 95-30 VSA/unprimed 23.7 ± 2.5 MPa, 95-30 VSA/primed 24.3 ± 4.1 MPa), and these values were not statistically different, whereas the two control groups exhibited significantly lower bond strengths (unetched/unprimed 12.2 ± 1.7 MPa, unetched/primed 9.5 ± 2.7 MPa). SEM observations revealed that 95-30 VSA led to a microporous (felt-like) surface, which was different from the surface structure etched with 90-5 SA. Etching the PEKK surface with SA or VSA significantly improved the bond strength between resin composite and PEKK in contrast with the application of the phosphate primer. Appropriate chemical etching could be a useful option when fabricating prostheses using PEKK-based materials and indirect resin composites.

The surface of a composite block (Gradia Block) was ground with silicon carbide paper. After treatment with a silane primer, a adhesive agent was applied to each testing specimen. The specimens were then bonded with a light-curing resin composite. After 24 h, the shear bond strength values were determined and compared using a post hoc test (α=0.05, n=8/group). We also prepared control specimens without primer (No primer) and/or without adhesive agent (No adhesive). Results PZ/SB-Dual and GP/SB-Dual presented the highest bond strength, followed by GP/P-Bond, CP/SB-Dual, CP/R-Adhesive, No primer/SB-Dual, GP/R-Adhesive, CP/P-Bond, No primer/R-Adhesive, PZ/R-Adhesive, CP/SB-Self, PZ/P-Bond, PZ/SB-Self, and GP/SB-Self in descending order of bond strength. No primer/P-Bond, No primer/SB-Self, and all specimens in the SB-Light and No adhesive groups presented the lowest bond strengths. Conclusion A dual-curing adhesive agent (SB-Dual) containing a tributylborane derivative in combination with a silane primer (GP or PZ) presents a greater bond strength between the composite block and the repairing resin composite than the comparators used in the study.

The present study was conducted to evaluate the effects of an experimental adhesive agent [methyl methacrylate-tributylborane liquid (MT)] and two adhesive agents containing silane on the bonding between a resin composite block of a computer-aided design and manufacturing (CAD/CAM) system and a light-curing resin composite veneering material. The surfaces of CAD/CAM resin composite specimens were ground with silicon-carbide paper, treated with phosphoric acid, and then primed with either one of the two silane agents [Scotchbond Universal Adhesive (SC) and GC Ceramic Primer II (GC)], no adhesive control (Cont), or one of three combinations (MT/SC, MT/GC, and MT/Cont). A light-curing resin composite was veneered on the primed CAD/CAM resin composite surface. The veneered specimens were subjected to thermocycling between 4 and 60 °C for 10,000 cycles, and the shear bond strengths were determined. All data were analyzed using analysis of variance and a post hoc Tukey-Kramer HSD test (α = 0.05, n = 8). MT/SC (38.7 MPa) exhibited the highest mean bond strengths, followed by MT/GC (30.4 MPa), SC (27.9 MPa), and MT/Cont (25.7 MPa), while Cont (12.9 MPa) and GC (12.3 MPa) resulted in the lowest bond strengths. The use of MT in conjunction with a silane agent significantly improved the bond strength. Surface treatment with appropriate adhesive agents was confirmed as a prerequisite for veneering CAD/CAM resin composite restorations.

The purpose of the present study was to evaluate the retention strength between a resin composite veneering material and three types of cobalt-chromium (Co-Cr) alloy substrates. Co-Cr alloy specimens with 81 retention devices (LSR), with 144 retention devices (LDR), and without retention device (LN) were fabricated using a laser-sintering system. The specimens were air-abraded with alumina, conditioned with a primer [Alloy primer (AP) or M.L. primer (ML)], and veneered with a light-polymerized resin composite (Gradia). Three control groups (LSR-N, LDR-N, and LN-N) without primer were also prepared. After 20,000 thermocycles in 4 and 60 °C water, tensile retention strengths were determined using a universal testing machine. Data were analyzed by analysis of variance and a post hoc Tukey-Kramer HSD test (α = 0.05, n = 8). The highest retention strengths were obtained in LSR-AP (28.3 MPa), LSR-ML (23.3 MPa), LDR-AP (26.9 MPa), and LDR-ML (27.8 MPa), and these values were not significantly different. In the absence of a retention device, the retention strengths were significantly different in the following order: LN-N (0.1 MPa) < LN-ML (12.4 MPa) < LN-AP (20.2 MPa). The specimens without primer were significantly different in the following order: LN-N (0.1 MPa) < LSR-N (15.4 MPa), LDR-N (17.1 MPa). No significant difference was found between the numbers of retention devices, which were 81 and 144. In conclusion, the combined use of the primers and the retention devices is recommended when the laser-sintered Co-Cr alloy is veneered with the resin composite materials to maximize the retention strength.

The purpose of this study was to evaluate the effect of five primers [Super-Bond C&B Monomer (SB), Clearfil Ceramic Primer, Alloy Primer, M.L. Primer, and AZ Primer] and two undercoating opaque resins [Super-Bond C&B (S-opaque) and Ceramage Pre-opaque (C-opaque)] on the bonding of a resin composite veneering material to a ceria-stabilized tetragonal zirconia polycrystals/alumina nanocomposite (Ce-TZP/Al2O3). Disk-shaped specimens of Ce-TZP/Al2O3 were sandblasted with alumina and primed. The undercoating opaque resins and resin composites were subsequently applied to the specimen, and then light cured. After 5000 thermocycles at 4°C and 60°C, shear bond strengths were determined. Data were analyzed using analysis of variance, Tukey-Kramer honest significant difference test, and Student t test (n = 10, α = 0.05). With the exception of SB/S-opaque, all S-opaque groups exhibited significantly higher bond strengths than C-opaque groups. The use of S-opaque resin is recommended when veneering frameworks made of Ce-TZP/Al2O3.

The purpose of the present study was to evaluate the wear of four different ceramics and human enamel. The ceramics used were lithium disilicate glass (e.max Press), leucite-reinforced glass (GN-Ceram), yttria-stabilized zirconia (Aadva Zr), and feldspathic porcelain (Porcelain AAA). Hemispherical styli were fabricated with these ceramics and with tooth enamel. Flattened enamel was used for antagonistic specimens. After 100,000 wear cycles of a two-body wear test, the height and volume losses of the styli and enamel antagonists were determined. The mean and standard deviation for eight specimens were calculated and statistically analyzed using a non-parametric (Steel-Dwass) test (α = 0.05). GN-Ceram exhibited greater stylus height and volume losses than did Porcelain AAA. E.max Press, Porcelain AAA, and enamel styli showed no significant differences, and Aadva Zr exhibited the smallest stylus height and volume losses. The wear of the enamel antagonist was not significantly different among GN-Ceram, e.max Press, Porcelain AAA, and enamel styli. Aadva Zr resulted in significantly lower wear values of the enamel antagonist than did GN-Ceram, Porcelain AAA, and enamel styli. In conclusion, leucite-reinforced glass, lithium disilicate glass, and feldspathic porcelain showed wear values closer to those for human enamel than did yttria-stabilized zirconia.

RESUMO

This review, focusing mainly on research related to methyl methacrylate/tributylborane (MMA/TBB) resin, presents the early history of dentin bonding and MMA/TBB adhesive resin, followed by characteristics of resin bonding to dentin. Bond strengths of MMA/TBB adhesive resin to different adherends were discussed and compared with other bonding systems. Factors affecting bond strength (such as conditioners, primers, and medicaments used for dental treatment), bonding mechanism, and polymerization characteristics of MMA/TBB resin were also discussed. This review further reveals the unique adhesion features between MMA/TBB resin and dentin: in addition to monomer diffusion into the demineralized dentin surface, graft polymerization of MMA onto dentin collagen and interfacial initiation of polymerization at the resin-dentin interface provide the key bonding mechanisms.

The purpose of this study was to investigate the effect of an experimental surface treatment with alumina blasting and acid etching on the bond strengths between each of two resin composites and commercially pure titanium. The titanium surface was blasted with alumina and then etched with 45wt% H2SO4 and 15wt% HCl (H2SO4-HCl). A light- and heat-curing resin composite (Estenia) and a light-curing resin composite (Ceramage) were used with adjunctive metal primers. Veneered specimens were subjected to thermal cycling between 4 and 60°C for 50,000 cycles, and the shear bond strengths were determined. The highest bond strengths were obtained for Blasting/H2SO4-HCl/Estenia (30.2 ± 4.5 MPa) and Blasting/Etching/Ceramage (26.0 ± 4.5 MPa), the values of which were not statistically different, followed by Blasting/No etching/Estenia (20.4 ± 2.4 MPa) and Blasting/No etching/Ceramage (0.8 ± 0.3 MPa). Scanning electron microscopy observations revealed that alumina blasting and H2SO4-HCl etching creates a number of micro- and nanoscale cavities on the titanium surface, which contribute to adhesive bonding.

The purpose of this study was to evaluate and compare the bond strengths between resin composite veneer and laser-sintered cobalt-chromium (Co-Cr) alloy with and without retention devices (Laser-R and Laser-N respectively). Cast Co-Cr alloy with and without retention devices (Cast-R and Cast-N respectively) were also prepared for fabrication technique comparison. Disk-shaped Co-Cr alloy specimens were air-abraded with alumina and veneered with a veneering system, Estenia C&B (ES) or Ceramage (CE). After 20,000 thermocycles, tensile testing was performed. Data were analyzed by ANOVA and multiple comparison test. When no retention devices were present, no significant differences were observed between Laser-N/ES and Cast-N/ES, or between Laser- N/CE and Cast-N/CE, but ES exhibited significantly higher bond strength than CE. With retention devices, Laser-R/ES, Cast- R/ES and Laser-R/CE showed no significant differences, and their retention strengths were significantly higher than that of Cast- R/CE. Compared to cast Co-Cr alloy, laser-sintered Co-Cr alloy with retention devices provided better retention durability for resin composite-veneered prostheses.
